Cityscape–"Dusk in the Big Apple"
Rhonda Hartis Smith © 2008
This was from my trip to New York City last February, it was at dusk so that’s why it’s a little grey, at that point in the day when you finally turn on your headlights. What’s a good title for this one? I know you can do better than my “The Big Apple”. I feel like this painting needs something but I’m not sure what–any suggestions?

Great painting! This doesn’t sound very original, but what about “Dusk in the Big Apple?”

Brenda I like that–that one word really describes the painting a lot better, doesn’t it.
Thanks,
Rhonda

Ohhh! Ahhh! Love your painting. I see Macy’s, so I think this must be in the thirties. Oh, and I love the yellow cabs in the painting.
Brenda’s suggestion is a good one.

Hello Rhonda,
That is a great painting, I would love to see New York one day.
I think Brenda has a chosen a good title.
Happy Sunday to you.

Hi Paz,
There has to be yellow cabs if it’s New York City.
Hi Suzanne,
For a small town girl like me, NYC is awesome and I love to visit.
I think Brenda’s suggestion is a winner!
Thanks all for your suggestions.

This is a good capture on NYC, Rhonda! It certainly is more grey than any color most of the time.
I’d put a water tank or air conditioner unit on the top of one of the buildings on the right –something to break up the sky? The skyline always seems so asymmetrical to me when I’m in Manhattan.

Hi Gina & Pat,
Thanks for your comments on my NYC painting. I'll look at my reference picture to see if I have something that I can use.
I kind of edited a little and left out a few items in front such as lamp posts.
Thanks,
Rhonda

Rhonda, I was wondering how you painted this. Did you set up your materials and easel on the street and paint right there? Or, did you take a photograph and work on and off on this? It’s beautiful. I’m always curious to find out how artists work.

Hi Mari,
This painting I did from a picture, but some artists paint plein air (on location). I'm not fast enough to paint this scene plein air-you have to work small & fast before the light changes.
Maybe someday. . .

I wish I could give you some suggestions… but to me it looks P.E.R.F.E.C.T as it is!
